The Review

Dragon's Dogma 2 released in March 2024 and immediately became one of the year's most debated games. Capcom deliberately restricted fast travel to create a world where every journey is an adventure - oxcart ambushes, random monster encounters, and Pawn companions chattering with contextual knowledge make traversal feel alive in ways most open worlds don't. Climbing a cyclops to attack its head never gets old.

The Vocation (class) system is among the best in action RPGs. The Mystic Spearhand - a new class that combines melee and magic - became an immediate community favorite. The Pawn system, where AI companions learn from your playstyle and can be shared online to help other players, creates a unique social layer without traditional multiplayer. Finding a message left by someone else's Pawn referencing a secret you haven't discovered yet is a specific joy this game does well.

The launch was marred by microtransaction controversy - Capcom sold fast travel items in the shop that were obtainable in-game, which was poorly received. Performance on console at launch was inconsistent; patches improved it. The story is the weakest element, thin and predictable by JRPG standards. But Dragon's Dogma 2 is not about story - it's about the emergent adventure that happens when you commit to its philosophy of inconvenience as design.

+ THE GOOD

  • Climbing large monsters to attack weak points remains the best physical combat in open-world RPGs
  • Vocation system offers genuine build diversity with the new Mystic Spearhand being excellent
  • Pawn system creates organic discovery and a shared online layer without requiring multiplayer

− THE BAD

  • Microtransaction controversy at launch, though all items are obtainable in-game
  • Restricted fast travel will frustrate players who prefer efficient traversal
  • Story is thin and predictable - this is not the game's appeal
WAITNEXT SAVE POINT

Dragon's Dogma 2 earns a 7.5/10 (B) and a WAIT. Best on PC. Worth your time? KINDA.
