Lethal Company entered Steam Early Access in October 2023 and became one of the year's most viral games, driven almost entirely by streamer and content creator playthrough clips. You and up to three friends play corporate employees sent to derelict industrial moons to collect scrap and meet quota. The monsters are lethal, the darkness is total, and the way your teammates die is almost always your fault or theirs in a way that generates uncontrollable laughter.
Developer Zeekerss built Lethal Company alone, and the game's rough edges are part of its character. The monster design ranges from genuinely terrifying (the Bracken, which stands just behind you until you look at it; the Coil-Head, which only stops moving when observed directly) to absurdist (the Nutcracker, a toy soldier with a shotgun). The ship radio communication while teammates are inside a facility creates natural asymmetric tension.
As Early Access, the game continues to receive updates. The content is thin for solo players - this is fundamentally a social experience where group dynamics generate the comedy. Version 50 update added significant content including new moons, mechanics, and monsters. The game's pricing (.99) made it one of the best-value social experiences of the year. If you have three friends and a shared tolerance for dying repeatedly while laughing, nothing else comes close.
