The Review
Manor Lords entered Steam Early Access in April 2024 and broke records for a city-builder, reaching 2 million sold in its first week - extraordinary for a strategy title. It was developed primarily by one person, Greg Styczen, over seven years. The game blends city-building (managing burgage plots, supply chains, and population happiness) with real-time tactical battles where you command small medieval armies across the same map your settlers live on.
The visual presentation is exceptional for a solo project - snow accumulates on rooftops, markets animate with genuine life, and the seasonal cycle changes the landscape meaningfully. The supply chain management, where each building requires labor and resources routed through burgage plot families rather than abstracted workers, creates an unusual level of granularity. Watching your settlement grow from a clearing in the forest to a bustling market town feels genuinely earned.
As Early Access, Manor Lords is content-light relative to the genre's finished titles. The campaign mode, late-game content, and diplomatic systems are limited or absent as of mid-2025, and balance patches have shifted the meta significantly across updates. The combat is functional but less developed than the city-building. Styczen has communicated actively with the community about development priorities. This is a promising foundation that Early Access players are right to be excited about.
